Why Reddit Videos Download Without Sound (and How to Fix It)
DownloadKit ·
Reddit's v.redd.it videos keep audio in a separate file. DownloadKit downloads both streams and merges them in your browser, so the MP4 you save has sound.
The technical reason
Reddit serves videos with adaptive streaming (DASH): one file per video resolution and one audio file. Players combine them on the fly. Tools that grab only the video file give you a silent clip.
How DownloadKit handles it
- It reads the post's DASH manifest to find every resolution and the audio track.
- When you pick a quality, both files are downloaded through DownloadKit.
- They're merged into one MP4 on your device with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly — no re-encoding, so it's fast and lossless.
Some Reddit videos genuinely have no audio (GIF-style posts). For those, DownloadKit offers a GIF conversion instead.
