Is It Legal to Download Videos from Instagram, TikTok or YouTube?
DownloadKit ·
Downloading public videos for private, offline viewing is generally tolerated, but copyright still belongs to the creator. Re-uploading, selling or using the content commercially without permission can infringe copyright and platform terms.
This is general information, not legal advice. Laws differ by country.
Three separate questions
- Copyright law — the creator owns their work. Making a private copy for personal use is permitted or tolerated in many jurisdictions; distributing copies usually isn't.
- Platform terms — most platforms' terms say you may only download through their own features. Breaking terms is a contract matter between you and the platform, not usually a crime.
- Fair use / fair dealing — commentary, criticism, news reporting, education and parody may allow limited use. It's decided case by case.
Safe habits
- Download your own content, or ask the creator.
- Keep downloads for personal, offline viewing.
- Credit creators when sharing, and never claim their work.
- Prefer Creative Commons or public-domain material for projects.
